something I had learned along the way Tamon Yamamoto

What I have learned in New Zealand is that when people ask you how you are doing, you ask them back. I was surprised at first, because in Japan we don't often ask how we are doing. In New Zealand, I learned that this exchange is like a greeting. There are many different ways to answer, and I am learning more and more every day。

  1. I also think the greeting is a fresh and good thing.

  2. Yes as we live in a culture, we pick up the customary greetings of that culture, and indeed "How are you doing?" is a common one in New Zealand. Yes you should ask the person who asked you how they are doing too. What else should you say, though? David :-)
