Crime & Punishment: An Opinion -- Masateru Yamahata

I choose topic 5A.2 "Is prison an effective deterrent against crime?".

In my opinion, prison can be an effective deterrent against crime. Some people say prisons are meaningless. However, if that were really the case, there wouldn't be so many prisons in the world in the first place. Some people do not commit crimes because they do not want to go to prison. I believe that people's morals and the presence of prisons act as a deterrent to crime.

  1. I agree with you Masateru. I believe some people think twice about doing certain crimes because they don't want to lose their liberty. At the same time, though, prisons have often been used for repressive purposes. I believe that they can serve the cause of justice, but they haven't always done so. David :-)
